Meet the new ‘left behind’ — Labour’s middle-class elite

This will be seen as the moment Labour ceased to be a party of the working class

Victory has 100 fathers and defeat is an orphan. I thought of that phrase last week as the contenders to replace Jeremy Corbyn as Labour leader explained why their party had just suffered its worst defeat since 1935. For Sir Keir Starmer, Labour had not tackled Boris Johnson’s slogan, “Get Brexit done”. For Emily Thornberry, Corbyn was “let down” by his advisers over Brexit, anti-semitism and the Salisbury attack. For Clive Lewis, defeat followed “indecisiveness” about Brexit and a failure to “unleash” Labour’s grassroots.

What unites these unsatisfactory accounts is a broader problem that has afflicted the liberal left since the onset of Brexit, Trump and our culture wars — narrow thinking and a preference for comfort blankets over cold, hard reality.
