A man has died after a car ploughed into railings and a lamp post following a police chase through Bolton.
The man, aged in his 20s, refused to stop for officers while he was driving on the A6 Manchester Road in Bolton.
He continued to drive the white Volkswagen Golf towards Chequerbent Roundabout.
Officers lost the vehicle, but then found it a short time later after it smashed into railings and a lamp post on the approach to the roundabout.
The driver of the car, a man believed to be his 20s, died at the scene despite the efforts of emergency services.
Nobody else was inside the vehicle at the time.
The incident took place at around 1am today (Friday, January 10) and has been referred to the Independent Office of Police Conduct, by GMP’s Professional Standards Branch.
Police have sealed off the A6 Manchester Road in both directions while an investigation takes place.
Inspector Danny Byrne, of GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “Sadly a man has lost his life as a result of this collision and his family will be supported by specially trained officers.
“The scene will remain in place while the investigation is ongoing which means a number of road closures will be in place throughout the morning so commuters are advised to avoid the area where possible.
“As enquiries progress, I would appeal for any witnesses or anyone with any information that could assist our investigation to please get in touch.”
