A PENSIONER has been arrested after beating a seagull to death — because it tried to steal his pasty.
Stunned eyewitnesses said the 67-year-old was seen viciously hitting the bird with a walking stick in the seaside town of Rhyl, North Wales.
One onlooker recalled how the seagull had been “smashed to bits” and that she had “boxed the bird up” before any children could spot it.
The witness, who has asked to remain anonymous, said the man returned to one of the nearby pubs to finish his drink after battering the defenceless bird.
The incident, which took place just before 12.30pm on Thursday, saw cops arrest the OAP before taking him in for questioning.
A spokesman for North Wales Police, said: “We were called to Market Street at 12.26pm today to reports of an elderly man hitting a bird with a walking stick.
“The 67-year-old man was then arrested under the Wildlife Countryside Act Protection of Birds law before being taken into custody.”
The RSPCA has been approached for comment.
Under the Wildlife & Countryside Act, it is illegal to kill or harm birds.
In the event of prosecution the maximum fine is £5000 or a six-month prison sentence.
The pasty theft comes as experts revealed the birds are turning to cannibalism due to a lack of food.
And just last year, a “psycho” gull snatched chihuahua Gizmo in Devon, and was spotted munching on live pigeons, starlings and even rabbits, leaving behind grisly carcasses and bits of fur.
