A man has been stabbed to death and another wounded at a village pub tonight.
Essex Police said two men suffered stab wounds outside the Rose & Crown pub in the village of Writtle, one mile west of Chelmsford. The first report came in at 8pm.
One of the men died at the scene, while the other is in hospital with non life threatening injuries.
Four men have been arrested on suspicion of murder while a police cordon has closed off the traditional village green.
An Essex Police spokesman said: “We are investigating an incident in which a man has sadly died.
“We were called at 8pm on Friday 31 January with reports two men had been assaulted outside the Rose and Crown pub in The Green, Writtle.
“Emergency services attended but sadly one of the men died at the scene. The other was taken to hospital for treatment. His injuries were not life changing or life threatening.
“Both men had suffered stab wounds.
“Four men have been arrested on suspicion of murder and have been taken into custody for questioning.
“Officers are carrying out enquiries in the area and the road is currently closed while we carry out forensic examinations.
“We’d like to thank members of the public who are assisting with our investigation and ask anyone who has yet to speak to officers to please call 101 quoting incident 1107 of Friday 31 January.”
A police cordon is in place outside the Rose and Crown on The Green in Writtle and video from the scene shows a large emergency services presence.
People reported seeing police officers talking to witnesses and taking evidence bags from the scene. Police were also searching the car park with torches.
The Green has been closed and drivers are not able to pass until the cordon has been lifted.
A man at the scene, who wished to remain anonymous, told EssexLive: “I was in the pub tonight having a meal. We left to go home then 10 minutes later we saw all the police here. It looks like the police are searching the smoking area.”
