A man’s body has been discovered under a bridge on the M5, closing part of the motorway during the morning rush hour.

The northbound carriageway was shut from Junction 1 to the M6, between West Bromwich and Great Barr, leading to three-hour long delays.

It is thought that one lane has since been re-opened.  

The death is currently being treated as unexplained.

West Midland Police initally issued a tweet that said: ‘We’re investigating after a man’s body was found on the M5 under a bridge at around 7am today.

‘The motorway is closed northbound from Junction 1 to the M6, and delays are expected.’

Highways England added: ‘Due to a police incident there is a total closure of the M5 northbound from J1 West Bromwich to the M6 traffic will be diverted off the motorway at J1 diversion route to follow.’

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance said: ‘We were called by the police to the M5 in Great Barr this morning. 

‘Two ambulances and a paramedic officer were sent to the scene. 

‘Sadly, nothing could be done to save a man and he was confirmed dead on scene.’
