Married couple arrested over death of Louise Smith, 16, as police confirm body is missing teenager

A married couple arrested over the death of 16-year-old Louise Smith are pictured for the first time, as police launch a murder probe after confirming a body found in the woods is the missing teenager.

The teenager, from the Leigh Park area, was reported missing on VE Day earlier this month, with her body discovered in Havant Thicket, a dense woodland, on Thursday.

A forensic team continue to search the home of Shane and Chazlynn Jayne Mays, (known as Cjay), both 29, in Havant, Hampshire, where Miss Smith had been staying with her cousin Mrs May after allegedly being placed there by social services, reports The Sun.

The couple were arrested on May 15 on suspicion of kidnapping, a week before police raided their home on Friday – they have been released on bail.

Hampshire Police said formal identification procedures of the body had been completed and that the teenager’s family had been informed – and were being supported by specialist officers.

Investigating forensic officers were photographed taking items including carpet and clothes from the Mays’ flat in Leigh Park, Hampshire.

Mr May’s sister Cassie Rawlinson, who lives in nearby Portsmouth, Hampshire, told The Sun last night: ‘Shane took her in because he is kind like that. I don’t think it was the first time she had stayed there either. Shane is lovely and he helps anyone out. They’re both nice people and always help people who need it.

Adding: ‘They were the ones looking after the girl, they were the ones who reported her missing and contacted her mum, they were the ones who put it on social media asking everyone else.’

Mourners were seen laying flowers at the woodland site a mile where Miss Smith’s body was discovered, a mile and a half from the Mays’ home.

The teenager, who vanished on May 8, was described by family friends as a ‘charming young girl who had her whole life ahead of her’.

Devastated members of the community said Louise was ‘just your typical teenager’ as they laid flowers at a woodland site, twenty five bouquets of flowers have now been laid at the entrance.

Eyewitnesses say that Louise was last seen at a skatepark around two miles from her home on May 8, the 75th anniversary of VE Day.

Police were investigating her disappearance today as they searched a property.

Police also searched another property, a semi-detached house a mile away.

Family friend Jackie Meredith today laid a bouquet and described Louise as ‘girly’ and urged police to get to the bottom of the investigation.

Mrs Meredith said: ‘She was a really lovely young girl and her family were lovely too.

‘She was just your typical teenager, she was a bubbly and funny girl. You could chat to her easily, she was a charming young girl and was always friendly to people.

‘She was very popular and had lots of friends, she had a large circle of them. She was a bit girly like teenage girls are, I really can’t express how lovely she was.

‘What has happened is disgusting, it’s just so sad. I really hope the police find out what happened to her, whatever it was.

‘We need to know, we all need to know as we live here. Her parents of course need to know, but we as a community need to know.

‘It is all such a shame… She had her whole life ahead of her.

I just hope the police find out what has happened and who done it.’

A neighbour said: ‘On VE Day I saw a red van outside the flats and a girl getting into it with bundles of clothes. I reported this to police as it didn’t feel right.

‘I can’t say if it was definitely her but it was a girl around her age.’

Another local said: ‘Louise had been suffering from depression lately and had apparently been bullied at school.’

Last Friday police started searching the Mays’ house.

‘They were there all throughout last weekend,’ a resident said.

Mandy Fernando has known the 16-year-old since she was a little girl.

She laid flowers at the entrance to Havant Thicket in Hampshire where police discovered a body believed to be Louise’s.

Mandy described Louise as a lovely girl with a heart of gold. ‘The community is devastated, sad, shocked,’ Mandy said. ‘I can’t speak for everybody but when anyone hears of a young person, whoever it may be, it’s very sad.’

Louise’s neighbour John Singleton said he saw the girl on the day she went missing.

‘She just went out walking, I didn’t know where she was going. It’s very sad, the outcome is the saddest, for a while we had some hope.’

It also emerged yesterday that Louise’s mother wrote on Facebook the day before police found a body how frustrated she was not being able to look for her daughter.

She wrote on Wednesday night: ‘I want to scream from the rooftops that I want to be looking everywhere. I have been told not to go searching the Thicket and Leigh Park Gardens, any search must be away from there.’

Police have issued a CCTV image showing Louise leaving a Tesco store on the evening before she disappeared.

An eyewitness said she had gone to the supermarket twice, once with another person earlier in the afternoon and then on her own in the evening.

He said: ‘I saw Louise enter Tesco in the afternoon and then I saw her later in the day on her own buying a bag of ice.’

Detective Chief Superintendent Scott MacKechnie said a ‘dedicated’ team of 100 officers are ‘really focused on identifying who is responsible’.

The police officer urged the public to help them ‘piece together the last moments of Louise’s life’ by coming forward with CCTV or sightings in Havant, Hants.

DCS MacKechnie said a post-mortem has been carried out but would not reveal the cause of Louise’s death or when she died.

He did however reveal that Louise had been staying in apartment building Ringwood House, Havant.

He asked people from Leigh Park in Havant to come forward with CCTV or footage.

He said: ‘Our call now is to get help from the local community and people who frequent those areas.

‘What we know is, we’ve issued CCTV footage of Louise on May 7 at the Tesco in Leigh Park.

‘We believe then that she was in the Somborne Drive area near to Ringwood House around lunchtime on VE Day.

‘VE Day was a big celebration for the country, the country was still in lockdown then so there were people having garden parties and moving around in their cars.

‘Did anyone see Louise? Who was she with? She was a small girl in stature and we believe she was wearing a black jacket.

‘We particularly want to focus on the afternoon in VE Day and people who may have seen her or may have CCTV.’

He said Louise’s mum, Rebbecca Cooper, is grieving.

He said: ‘The mum is upset as you can imagine, distressed. She found out last night that it was her daughter so you can only imagine the grief she is going through.’

At the time of her disappearance Louise was wearing black jeans, a black and white striped T-shirt, black trainers and a black coat with a fur hood.

Police are appealing for anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage from the area to get in touch.

The force also released a map showing where Louise was found and where she was last seen.

Mr Mackechnie said: ‘Please take a look at this map – if you live in the surrounding areas depicted on this map and have video footage or information, please get in touch.

‘In addition, we’re keen to hear from any dog walkers who use Havant Thicket and Staunton Country Park, drone operators, and cyclists with helmet cameras or Go Pros that may have been using the area on these days, but particularly the afternoon of VE Day.’
