What time is Nicola Sturgeons covid update? Where to watch and what to expect

Nicola Sturgeon will update MSPs in the Scottish Parliament later today on the state of the Covid pandemic across the country.

It comes as cases of the deadly virus continue to surge following the relaxation of lockdown restrictions and kids returning to school following the summer break.

The First Minister will address Holyrood for the first time on the pandemic since Scotland moved out of the levels system on August 9.

Following the statement members of the parliament will get to quiz the SNP leader on her handling of the current situation.

The latest figures for Scotland showed that 6,029 new cases had been identified in the last 24 hours.

There were a total of seven deaths in the same time period.

It brings the death toll since last March – of people who first tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days – to 8,118.

There are currently 585 people in hospital confirmed to have the virus with 54 being treated in intensive care.

So far 4,106,408 people have received their first vaccination with 3,680,761 having a second jab.

Here’s all you need to know about the statement to parliament:

What time is the statement?

The First Minister is expected to get to her feet at around 2.50pm today.

She will make a 20-minute statement on the current situation then take questions for around 40 minutes from MSPs.

What to expect?

During her 20-minute speech to the Scottish Parliament Nicola Sturgeon isn’t expected to reintroduce any lockdown measures like we witnessed over the course of the last 18 months.

Cases continue to rise across Scotland so it is expected the SNP leader will urge caution in order to prevent the NHS becoming overwhelmed again.

Practicing good hygiene is a message expected to be conveyed by Sturgeon in her speech.
