M62 closed both directions due to serious collision

The M62 has been closed in both directions in Merseyside following a ‘serious collision.’

The motorway is currently shut between junctions 7 and 8, near Warrington, following the incident which happened at around 11.30pm on Friday.

Police, Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service and the North West Ambulance Service attended the scene.

Traffic trapped by the closure was released in the early hours of the morning.

The motorway remained closed as of 7.40am.

Highways England said: “The M62 in Merseyside is currently closed in both directions between J7 and J8 near Warrington due to a serious collision.

“Emergency services including the North West Motorway Police Group are in attendance. Highways England has resources deployed to assist.

“Road users are advised to expect disruption and to allow extra journey time.

“Police on scene advise the road will remain closed for a protracted period to allow a full collision investigation to take place. The road is likely to remain closed through the night and into the daylight hours.”

Merseyside Police said: “M62 has been closed in both directions between junctions 7 and 8 and is expected to be closed for some considerable time to allow for investigations to be carried out at the scene.

“Diversions have been put in place and motorists are being advised to avoid the area and find use alternative routes.

“We realise that this will cause disruption and would like to thank the public for their patience and understanding whilst investigations are carried. A further update will be provided once the motorway is reopened. Traffic and travel bulletins on local radio stations will also be kept up-to-date with the status of the closure.”

North West motorway police tweeted: “Please be aware if you are just waking up that the M62 between junctions 7 and 8 is closed. The closure is both carriageways and will be closed for most of the morning. Please avoid the area”.

Diversion routes have been set up. Anyone travelling eastbound are advised to follow the solid black triangle diversion symbol on road signs and exit the M62 at J7 and join the A57 eastbound.

At Lingley Green turn left to join Lingley Green Avenue northbound.

Remain on Lingley Green Avenue to the roundabout with Whittle Avenue and join Whittle Avenue northbound.

At the next roundabout with Burtonwood Road join Burtonwood Road north towards the M62.

Re-join the M62 eastbound at J8.

Westbound travellers are advised to follow the hollow black square diversion symbol on road signs and exit the M62 at J8 and join Burtonwood Road southbound.

At the next roundabout join Whittle Avenue southbound.

At the next roundabout join Lingley Green Avenue westbound.

Remain on Lingley Green Avenue to its junction with the A57.

Turn right at the junction to join the A57 westbound.

Continue on the A57 to the M62 at J7.

Re-join the M62 westbound.
